CANNONBALL 2024!

2024 Cannonball Open Call is now CLOSED! Thank you for your applications.

Artists will be notified of their status by May 20, 2024.

WHAT ABOUT LATE APPLICATIONS?!

We will be reviewing late applications for Buy-Ins and Co-Presentations on a rolling basis through July 15, 2024.
No late applications for Special Track Applications will be considered, as they are adjudicated by community panels in April-May, 2024.

Use the links below for quick access to venue specs, festival facts, and FAQs, or scroll down to read the entire open call.

This year we’ve got new spaces to play in at Christ Church Neighborhood House and the newly created Nooks & Crannies venue, we’re continuing our commitment to racial equity and youth development with the BIPOC NWT, CSAW Award, and the PYAC cohort, we’re fostering new relationships through the Al-Bustan Award for SWANA Artists, and our producer cohort is envisioning a Cannonball Festival focused on intentionality, accessibility, and artistic experimentation.

NEED SOME HELP APPLYING? Check out our recent APPLICATION WORKSHOP

THE CANNONBALL MODEL:

The Cannonball model relies on artists who bring full length (45-60 minute) works that can load-in/out of the performance space in 15 minutes. We highly encourage you to plan ahead, and think about if this model is right for your work!

We love the challenge of helping to strategize how your work can fit into our model, but sometimes, there are certain works that we simply can’t accommodate. Feel free to reach out and chat with us about your show’s needs after submitting an application.

ALL ARTISTS RECEIVE:

  • Performance space, pre-set lighting looks, amplified sound, tech/dress rehearsal, and production support

  • Additional rehearsal time (subject to space availability)

  • Marketing and press support

  • Box office management, front of house staff, and insurance coverage

  • A dedicated concierge for personalized support

  • Access to community-focused programming: photo shoots, preview showings, social events, special workshops, drink tickets, and MORE!

2024 PRODUCTION TRACKS

Buy-In Track

  • Cannonball’s classic production model, and the one that makes it all work. Most artists are a part of the buy-in track. By buying in, they also support fellow festival artists disproportionately burdened by a financial buy-in, and directly help the festival cultivate (and yes, operate) an amazing creative community!

  • EVERYBODY!

  • Though Cannonball enjoys special rates for our extensive programming with our venue partners, the buy-in fee is not a 1:1 extension of our rental rate to you (though it is still a discount from an independent rental at any of our venues!). This is because:

    - We offer you our services! Cannonball artists receive tech support, marketing, publicity, front of house, community and audience engagement, as well as peer-to-peer exchange. So with your buy-in, you're not just paying for the space at a slight discount, you are also receiving some Cannonball services as well.

    - A small portion of your buy-in also represents your support for not just the culture of the Cannonball festival, but the welfare of your fellow artists on our various other tracks. For some, the buy-in is not financially possible whatsoever; for others, the burden of the buy-in is just one more in a long line of burdens placed on them by our industry unethically, disproportionately, and with no transparency. In either of these cases, participating in the festival would be unsustainable for them, in spite of the amazing, moving pieces these artists cultivate in their careers. To leave them out would be a loss not just for our audiences, but the entire festival. Your buy-in helps level the field for them, and make their participation not just possible, but prosperous!

For some additional transparency around ticket sales:

    - When setting buy-in fees, we heavily weigh the feasibility of recouping the fee through ticket sales, both from a seat capacity perspective, and a pricing perspective.

    - The pricing perspective is particularly challenging with our Pay-What-You-Can pricing structure. We guide our audiences to select tickets at $5 increments, but otherwise it’s up to them what their ticket costs. Especially as we double-down on our accessibility initiatives, this structure is integral to our Core Values.

    - While we are always experimenting with possibilities to expand artist accessibility to the festival—and our Special Presentation Tracks, and Co-Productions represent this—we need to emphasize: we actively encourage Buy-In Track artists to share in and celebrate our values, and the consequences of executing them. This may make the possibility of recouping Buy-In fees less likely, but the bottom line is: we completely believe it’s worth it, if we can help offer opportunities to other artists who can’t buy-in at all. All the way to very highest level, Cannonball artists offer what they can to enable and elevate the work of artists in our community.

  • The Buy In: Artists pay a flat fee in exchange for space usage and Cannonball’s services for their production, with a portion of the fee also supporting the Special Presentation Tracks and the festival’s general operations. To cover usage, these fees are assigned by performance space, at rates listed with space descriptions below.

The Return: 100% of ticket sales (after any FringeArts fees) goes directly back to the Buy-In artist. In alignment with our values, we set all Cannonball Festival shows at Pay-What-You-Can pricing.

Co-Presentation

  • The Co-Presentation track mitigates financial risk for artists by replacing the buy-in fee with a ticket split (typically 50-50) arrangement.

  • This track is reserved for artists with financial hardship and/or artists with a demonstrated ability to reach new audiences. Invitations to the co-presentation track are at the producers' discretion, but we invite conversations from all interested artists and encourage everyone to ask for what they need!

  • The Co-Presentation track is designed for artists for whom the financial burden of the Buy-In track is deterring, or who have a demonstrated ability to draw a distinct audience to Cannonball Festival. We ask that if you have personal and/or professional access to financial privilege, institutional resources, social advantages based on factors beyond your control, or great confidence in your ability to sell tickets, please seriously consider the option of the Buy-In track, as it allows other artists to participate in Cannonball.

If a show sells out at festival average ticket prices, the Buy-In rates across all ticketed venues offer artists more take-home revenue than if they go with the Co-Pro option. If you are not sure which model is right for you, reach out! We are happy to chat through the possibilities.

  • Artists pay a refundable deposit of $300, and are paid a portion of ticket sales. Ticket splits are most frequently an even 50-50, but are sometimes variable based on the space and the length of the run, and can range from 50-50 to 70-30 (artist keeps 70%).

In some exceptional cases, Co-Presented artists are awarded up front stipends to help make their participation in Cannonball possible. In the case that the refundable deposit would prevent an artist’s participation, it may be waived.

The tracks below are competitive, panel adjudicated presentation and/or development tracks which come with additional opportunities and resources.

WORKSHOPS, SECRET TREASURES, DEEP DIVES!

Cannonball offers a vibrant array of opportunities for artists and audiences to engage with each other outside of the mainstage shows at Cannonball. Sometimes this looks like movement workshops and classes, other times it looks like short & informal presentations of works-in-progress or script readings, or pop-up immersive and durational performance installations around our venues, and we've even had impromptu live music performances and artist panels & talkbacks.

  • We are more than happy to answer technical questions about completing the application. You can email us at admin@thealmanac.us. For specific questions about your show and where it might best fit into Cannonball’s programming, we ask that you submit your application first, and then schedule a meeting to talk about your show with a Cannonball Producer. This makes it easier for us to talk specifics!

  • Yes! You are welcome to apply to all tracks for which your work is eligible. If you apply and are accepted to multiple tracks that come with financial stipends, you will be asked to chose which opportunity you would like to take advantage of.

  • The Co-Presentation and Special Presentation Tracks (BIPOC New Work, CSAW Award, Al-Bustan Award, and Performance for Young Audiences Cohort) are all competitive opportunities. While Co-Presentation track decisions are made collectively by festival producers, the Special Presentation Track opportunities are adjudicated by panels of peer artists, award producing partners, and previous recipients. Panels are administrated by Cannonball Producers and Program Managers.

If you apply for a Special Presentation Track and you aren’t selected, you may still be offered a Co-Presentation or Buy-In Production Track.

  • In 2023, Snack Track supported new experiments in interactive, small-audience experiences at Cannonball. Through this special production track we were able to bring performances to Cannonball that expanded the boundaries of what, how, and where a Cannonball show could happen. In order to expand this opportunity we've created the Nooks and Crannies “venue” to cater to the needs of performance artists who are creating outside the boundaries of a more traditional or typical performance space.

Our goal is to make more room for immersive performances, intimate artistic encounters, and durational works that artist might otherwise not submit. We believe that artistic innovation is essential to what makes Cannonball what it is, and the creation of the Flex Venue is our way of engraining that value into the structure the festival.

  • In 2023, we offering the Split Bill track, where artists with a work that was shorter than 35 minutes were paired with another artist under one ticket. Split Bill are a great way to offer more opportunities to more artists. In 2024, instead of pairing artists together ourselves, we encourage you to grab your friends and build your own mixed bill evening of shorter works! You know your work best, and you know who your people are, so reach out to each other and submit one application for the whole bill. The more the merrier at Cannonball! Don’t know how to reach out to? Ask us! We can help to provide ideas.

  • All Cannonball shows are also registered as part of the Philly Fringe Festival, and we serve as a “Hub” of the Philly Fringe. FringeArts, as the parent organization of the Philly Fringe, works closely with Cannonball and directly with artists. We all collaborate to create the best possible festival!

  • No! We will share your registration information directly with FringeArts, the organization that administers the Philly Fringe. We will also cover your $20 registration fee! Please do not independently register your show for the Philly Fringe.

  • Yes! More than just producing your work, we are a part of and invested in continuing to build a community that can support itself. We think deeply about what independent artists need to successfully produce their shows. Pre-festival social events build camaraderie and connection between festival artists — and we try to supply as much donated food and drink as we can get our hands on!

All Cannonball artists are invited to participate in several photoshoots over the summer leading up to the Festival. However, the Fringe deadline for show images is June 15 and our photoshoots will likely occur after that, so your Cannonball photos are best for supplemental content like posters, postcards, and ads. In the coming months, you can sign up for a time slot, bring props and costumes, and collaborate with other artists to help us showcase the energy of the festival as a whole.

  • Miniball is our name for shorter versions of Cannonball that happen outside of the Philly Fringe. We’ve hosted Miniball during the months of of March, April and December over the last 2 years. We are excited about developing new works between festivals, and pooling resources for iterative making! We often invite past or future Cannonball artists to participate in Miniball and other pop-up off-festival programming.

  • Cannonball was founded by members of Almanac Dance Circus Theatre in 2021 (you can visit us at www.thealmanac.us). Since then, we’ve grown into a fully independent community-curated and artist-produced festival. As we turn 4 this year, we are proud to announce we are leaving the nest and stepping out from underneath Almanac, to operate as our own non-profit organization. We are truly artist-led! Lots of Cannonball artists work on the festival as producers, stage managers, box office managers, food vendors, and more!

  • Our festival has a light pirate theme. You may hear us say “ahoy” or “arg” every now and then. This is just to add some fun, and to speak to independent artists’ shared identity as renegades operating in a world of larger, more established institutions. Your show does not need to have anything to do with pirates to be a part of Cannonball.
